A booklet is where small mistakes multiply. One page out of order, or a page count that does not divide by four, and every copy in the box has the same problem. So the first thing we check on any booklet is the page sequence, before a single sheet is printed.

We print and bind programs, catalogs, manuals, workbooks, newsletters, magazines and price books here, in runs from a couple of dozen to a thousand. Short runs are the point: print what you need for this event or this season, and change it next time without throwing a pallet away.

Picking a binding

Saddle-stitch is folded sheets stapled through the spine. It is the fastest and cheapest binding, it lies reasonably flat, and it is what most programs, event booklets and show dailies use. It works from 8 pages up to about 64.

Coil punches a row of holes and runs a plastic coil through them. The book lies completely flat and folds back on itself, which is why manuals, workbooks, recipe books and anything used at a desk end up coil bound. Tabs and dividers can go in.

Perfect binding glues the pages into a square spine, like a paperback. It looks the most finished and the spine can carry a title, which suits catalogs, longer manuals and books for sale. It needs enough pages to form a spine, and it takes the longest, so it is quoted to the job.

Page counts, and why four matters

  • Saddle-stitched books are built from folded sheets, so the page count has to be a multiple of four — 8, 12, 16 and so on
  • The cover counts: a 16-page booklet is 12 inside pages plus a 4-page cover, unless the cover is printed on the same paper
  • If your count does not divide by four, we will tell you where blank pages would land so you can decide, rather than adding them silently
  • Thick saddle-stitched books push the middle pages outward (creep), so keep type well away from the outer edge
  • Perfect binding eats a little of the inside margin into the glue — leave extra room at the spine
  • Coil needs about 3/8" clear of the bound edge for the holes

Setting the file up

  • Send single pages in reading order, not printer spreads — we impose them
  • Add 1/8" bleed to any page with color running to the edge
  • Keep type 1/4" inside the trim, and further from the spine
  • For perfect binding, ask us for the spine width before you finish the cover
  • Send the cover as its own file if it prints on different stock

Binding pages you already have

Not every binding job starts with us printing it. Coil binding and color copying for one-off documents — a proposal, a training binder, a few copies of a manuscript — is ordinary counter work here. Bring the pages in or send the file and tell us how many copies.

Booklets & binding — questions we get

Straight answers.

What is the cheapest way to bind a booklet?

Saddle-stitch. It is folded sheets stapled through the spine, it is quick, and for anything up to about 64 pages it is usually the right answer.

How many pages can a saddle-stitched booklet have?

From 8 up to about 64, always in multiples of four, cover included. Beyond that the book gets too thick to fold cleanly, and coil or perfect binding is the better choice.

Do you do perfect binding?

Yes. Perfect binding needs enough pages to form a square spine and it takes longer than stitching or coil, so we quote it to the job. Send the page count, trim size and quantity.

How long does booklet printing take?

Short saddle-stitched runs are often ready the next day. Coil adds a punching and binding pass, and perfect binding takes longest. If you have a date, tell us at the start and we will work back from it.

Can you coil bind documents I bring in?

Yes. Coil binding for one-off documents is everyday counter work. Bring the pages or send the file and tell us how many copies you need.

Need it printed today?

Artwork approved before 10 AM is ready before we close. After that we guarantee tomorrow morning — and we tell you which before you pay.
